Muhabura Basket - Rwanda

The pattern in these beautiful fair trade baskets from Rwanda represent the evening stars as they rise over the Muhabura volcano, which straddles the border of Rwanda & Uganda. The name Muhabura means guide in the local language of Kinyarwanda and is derived from the historical use of this mountain to aid navigation. The Muhabura basket is made of naturally dyed raffia woven over bundled sweet grass.

Origin: Rwanda
Size: Approximately 16" diameter.
*Because each basket is a unique work of art, variations in size and color will occur.

About the Project: These fair trade baskets are woven by the women of the Kinigi Weavers Association, in a small village near Volcanoes National Park. Each fair trade peace basket is hand-crafted from sisal and consists of literally hundreds of stitches. The patterns of these baskets tell ancient stories and now stand as symbols of peace and reconciliation in a country rebuilding itself after the genocide.
