I love love love the holidays! As mid-October rolls around each I have already started making Thanksgiving plans and my December has begun to fill up with fun holiday cheer outings. Last year one of the new additions to my holiday fun was an ornament exchange. I have a group of friends whom I go out with every couple of months to try out new restaurants and for our December 2012 outing we added the ornament exchange. This December we will be meeting at one of San Diego’s newest hotspots and have decided to keep the ornament exchange tradition going.
Ornament exchanges are quite easy and a nice way to engage with one another around the holidays without having to spend too much money. For our first exchange we used the theme of our childhood homes (we are all transplants to San Diego) this year we are going for a more laissez-faire approach so I am going to bring one of Seven Hopes United’s lovely ornaments.
How we exchanged: we chose the person’s birthday that was closest to our dinner date and then shift two to her right and voila we all had new ornaments. Then we went around and explained the significance. See…fun and easy!
Along with the Eva Hand Painted Ornaments above checkout a few more ornaments from Seven Hopes United that I really like.
My maternal grandmother meant a great deal to me growing up and she loved cardinals, so every time I see one I think of her. This felt cardinal will be hanging on my tree this year.
This felt dove ornament is a reminder that the season is about peace for all people.

]]>The holidays are coming and as it turns out many of my friends’ birthdays are this time of year as well. So I have gift giving on my mind! One of my most favorite gifts to give is the gift basket! A gift basket is a fun and easy way to create not only a lovely gift but also a unique one too. And you can completely personalize the gift according to the receiver’s likes and interests. In this post I’d like to share with you two fair trade gift basket ideas that you could use for the holidays or for any occasion where you might need a gift to give.
Gift Basket for the Cook!
I like giving a magazine that the cook might like. Who doesn’t like to browse through a magazine! And why not treat the cook to a special homemade treat; I would include the fair trade pumpkin bread that we featured in an earlier Tasty Tuesday post. If you are an avid cook then you know that it can get messy in the kitchen so the Vivian Ikat Apron would be a nice touch. The sugar and spice spoons are so pretty, so why not add them too! Everyone can use extra towels when cooking and these Ethiopian Cotton Kitchen Towels can double as wrapping in the basket. Bundle it all up in our Ghana Bolga Market Basket and you have a pretty and unique gift!
Relaxation Gift Basket for a Friend!
Again a favorite magazine is always a nice touch! And why not give your friend some fair trade wine to enjoy while reading the magazine. Don’t forget one of our wine stoppers for any left over wine. Candles always add a sense of relaxation and the brazil nut candle is so earthy and grounding! The calming blues and purple of this super soft alpaca scarf would relax anyone, and again the scarf can be used as a wrapping. A pair of earrings, here the Tagua Chip Earrings in Sunset Orange, are just a little something extra for your friend. And finally bundle it all up in our Mini Bolga Market Basket.
I hope that these gift basket ideas inspire you this holiday season!

]]>It’s October and October is Fair Trade Month! And for Fair Trade Month I have committed to trying more fair trade products than I usually do. I was trying to think about ways to have more fair trade in my life and then it occurred to me that I love wine and chocolate so why not think about pairing a couple of fair trade wine and fair trade chocolates together.
Full disclosure, I have had both of the wines and chocolates and have loved them all. I didn’t actually do the pairing; I was just sharing my musings and daydreams of doing a pairing with all of you!
The next question is how does one go about pairing the wine and chocolate. Since I love red wine and most people I know also seem to enjoy red wine I decided to consider pairing two fair trade red wines and two fair trade chocolates together. I received a little advice from the internet and then went from there.
I would suggest pairing Fairhills fair trade wine in Cabernet Sauvignon with Theo Chocolate’s fair trade chocolate salted almond 70% dark chocolate.
Next I thought about what might go well with a Pinot Noir, since I am a big fan of Pinot Noir, so I thought Stellar Organics’ fair trade wine Pinotage would go well with Divine Chocolate’s fair trade chocolate in milk chocolate.
These are just a few of my favorites. Let me know your favorite pairs and if you pair these tell me your opinion too!

]]>When I was a girl and even into my early adult years I was not in the least bit fashionable. I didn’t think fashion mattered at all and I think I was concerned that I would spend too much time on something silly like fashion. But after living in New York City and now in Southern California these past several years I’ve learned that fashion isn’t silly at all. I have learned that I don’t need to spend a ton of time to look good and consequently, like working out and eating well, I feel better when I look nice. And fair trade fashion makes me feel even better because it gives back.

So today I thought I would give you a few tips that I have learned over the years about fashion, my own little style guide and also pair up some fair trade jewelry with some of my favorite outfits.
Dawn’s Personal Style Guide (please note that this little guide isn’t exhaustive):
1. Be Yourself!
2. Animal print (in small quantities) goes with just about everything.
3. Don’t spend as much on super trendy pieces; they won’t be long enough to get your money’s worth.
4. A beautiful bag and lovely shoes make all the difference.
5. Accessories are a must, along with the bag and shoes, earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces can make the most drab outfit look fun and fresh.
This is the short list; there’s always more to add but these are my favorite. Now on to a couple of outfits.
Casual Outfit Pairing:
A simple white t-shirt is always a good piece to have. It goes with everything and this one has a lot of detail but not too much to be over the top. The jewelry really pops on the white and those are mint green skinny jeans underneath.
Dress Up Outfit:
I’ve worn this outfit to work and out for drinks as well. I like how the colors really stand out on the black and white of the zebra print. Here’s also an example of using a little bit of animal print to jazz up an outfit and along with the blue pencil skirt and jewelry I think it’s a fun outfit!

]]>I recently attended a tea party themed baby shower and thought it would be wonderful to blend a special tea for the mom-to-be. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and wasn’t able to get a tea blended for her but I still loved the idea of blending my own fair trade tea so I inquired further with a friend who works for a local coffee and tea purveyor in San Diego.
Chamomile Flower & Green Sencha Tea
I chose a green tea and chamomile flower tea. Isn’t the chamomile flower just lovely to look at? This combination appealed to me because I don’t enjoy the taste of green tea but like the healthy benefits it offers. The blend of these fair trade teas created a wonderful flavor; the chamomile masked the taste of the green tea. But you can experiment with all sorts of loose leafs. A black tea combined with an orange or peach tea might be nice as well.
Chamomile Flower & Green Sencha Blended: a lovely combination
Combine the two or three teas you’d like to blend and then place the mixture in an infuser (you can pick an infuser up online or a shop like Target and some coffee shops sell them too) and allow the tea to steep in hot water just as you would with a bag of tea you purchase at the grocery store.
The infuser we used was Tea ZE Infused
I was able to pick up loose leaf at a Cafe Virtuoso, a coffee shop which sells coffee drinks as well as tea and coffee to make at home. However, one could purchase loose leaf tea in her grocery store as well as online and your community will most likely have a local roaster who sells specialty loose leaf teas for you to choose from.
I found it quite fun to blend my own fair trade teas and look forward to sharing my new combination with friends for birthday gifts, the holidays or as a hostess present. And wouldn’t the mix of chamomile tea and green tea look so pretty in a mason jar along with one of Seven Hopes United’s Eva Hand Painted Mugs? Just a thought!

]]>Having just returned from Ohio to visit family I have travel on my mind! Prior to having my son I tried to dress as efficiently as possible for the airport and now that I have a little one I am even more efficient, which I didn’t know was possible. I always wear slip on shoes, try to carry just one bag with anything I might need, within reason, and an easy comfy outfit that I can add a sweater or jean jacket to.
Below is my travel day ideal as inspired by fair and ethically traded companies. I hope it inspires you too and when you are ready for your next trip while we all know that the destination is the most important part still be sure to get there in comfortable clothing that is both fair and fashionable.
An easy outfit for travel day that is both fair & fashionable!
