Happy Fair Trade Easter!

fairtrade_easter_chocolate

Easter is just a week away and I am actually already prepared!  I tend to bring the details of a holiday together just before the big day but this year I was lucky enough to find everything I needed for Easter in advance. I was excited to buy the fair trade bunnies from my local food coop in San Diego.  And I picked up a cute plush toy and Easter book for my son at another locally owned San Diego store.  For me this year Easter is not only about celebrating with friends and family but it is about supporting my local community while also supporting growers working for a better life for themselves and their families in the developing world.

I hope that your Easter is filled with loved ones, special memories and tasty fair trade treats!

Have a very Happy Easter – Dawn

Vacation & Fair Trade

For my birthday in November my husband surprised me with a trip to Vancouver.  We had both wanted to go there for some time and we both really like all of Canada that we have visited, I am particularly fond of Montreal but I really enjoyed Vancouver as well.  Much to my husband’s dismay my idea of a vacation is waking up early and walking around different neighborhoods all day only stopping to have dinner. We have learned to compromise, usually I do some sightseeing alone in the mornings and he meets me later since he likes to sleep in on vacation.

While on vacation another thing I really like is checking out local shops. Vancouver is a splendid place to find local shopping in particular on Granville Island. There is a large public market with grocers, restaurants and tons of little shops. In my search of Granville Island I found Ten Thousand Villages, a shop that sells only fair trade items and can be found in various cities in the US too. I am familiar with Ten Thousand Villages, which obviously isn’t just local to Vancouver, still it was wonderful to step out of the cold and search through hundreds of lovely fair trade items.

I didn’t research fair trade in advance of my trip but I will do so in the future.  I could google fair trade and the name of the city I am visiting to find where it is being sold. I know that farmers markets in San Diego are a good place to find fair trade (Seven Hopes United is at The Little Italy Mercato and the Rancho Santa Fe farmers market) so I would check out farmers markets too. I also find it fun to check out local grocery stores to see what foods are more common in the city I am visiting and I always keep any eye out for fair trade there as well.  I find it so much fun to get to know a new city and I think it’s even more fun to find something I’m passionate about like fair trade in the new city as well.

St. Patrick’s Day – The Fair Trade Way

St. Patrick’s Day is a major holiday in Cleveland, Ohio where I grew up. When the Irish were immigrating to America around 100 years ago or so many of them settled in Northeast Ohio.  And even today there is a lot of Irish heritage pride in the city. So to celebrate this fun day there’s a big parade filled with Irish dancers, local politicians and high school marching bands (a little nerd disclosure here, I was in marching band for one year in high school and marched, quite proudly, in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade). Aside from parades, corned beef and Guinness, for those of age, celebrating St, Patrick’s Day is all about the color green!

Seven Hopes United carries several wonderful green products for you to choose from for this upcoming St. Patrick’s Day.  I have chosen a few of my favorites from the website for you to check out. And here is an Irish blessing for you and yours on this St. Patrick’s Day.

May you always have…
Walls for the winds
A roof for the rain
Tea beside the fire
Laughter to cheer you
Those you love near you
And all your heart might desire.

Fairtrade Fortnight!

Fair Trade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight is upon us!

If you’ve never heard of this celebration, it’s an annual campaign organized by the Fairtrade Foundation. Every year for a two-week period, fair trade is promoted through fun avenues like fashion shows, fairs, and food and drink tastings. The objective is to raise public awareness of fair trade and to get more ethically produced and funded products into local stores.

This year’s campaign is currently in full in swing in Dublin, Ireland (could there be a more fun location for March?!). It began on February 25 and wraps up March 10; the theme for 2013 is “I’m Going Further for Fair Trade in 2013.” The official website explains how choosing and specifically asking for fair trade is a powerful way to ensure farmers and workers can continue their enterprises in the future and earn steady enough wages to provide for their families and help their communities grow.

If you’ve never heard of this fun event or just want to find out more, check it out here! Make sure to watch the fun, informational videos on the site too!

Happy March!

XO,

Casey

Join our Fair Trade Alliance!

In the United States and other developed nations, we have the means and the freedoms to start our own businesses, put our skills to work and to expect that our ventures will reasonably succeed. In many other parts of the world, this opportunity is not available. Either locals don’t have access to the materials and finances to produce a product, or they are treated poorly while doing so. The fair trade movement has gained momentum by helping those in impoverished, suffering areas to produce, market and sell their goods and services. Seven Hopes United – Fair Trade Market of the World is an online retailer that has adopted this ethical business model, attempting to make a change while making a profit.

Earlier last year, my partner and I teamed up and fused our experiences in social work and successful business development into the vision that now guides Seven Hopes United. I was completely captivated by the notion that I didn’t have to move to Africa or Latin America to make an impact in the communities there. I took my knowledge of international community development, and worked to develop partnerships between fair trade cooperatives around the world. The majority of producers come from three underprivileged groups: women rescued from sex trafficking or abuse, those suffering from HIV/AIDS and people living on less than $1 a day.

Now we are partnering with other Fair Trade organizations like Scarlet Threads and Eyaas.com to shine a light on other globally conscious organizations. We want to encourage those who are passionate about fair trade to not only purchase our products but start discussions about the need for such companies.

Through Seven Hopes United and organizations like Scarlet Threads, we hope to provide a chance for the hardworking poor to create a new lifestyle for themselves. It’s not charity. We have ongoing business relationships with these organizations. Each producer must have fair trade certification and produce high quality products. Roughly half of each dollar goes back to supporting their partners around the world, a typical retail margin.

We would like to start an alliance for socially responsible businesses. We would love for other fair trade organizations to unite with us and promote change for these communities – it’s not about us – it’s about making a difference in the lives of underprivileged men, women, and children living on less than $1 a day. Everything we’ve done is by word of mouth. I really want people to engage with us on the social media side and get the word out there.

If you’re a fan of fair trade and being a socially conscious consumer, join our alliance – promote your favorite fair trade organization, join our Blog Carnival on May 20th, and post a blog or link to your Facebook page telling your friends about our Fair Trade Alliance. It will be a long journey, but what encourages me more than anything is the power that consumers have to effect change – it starts with you.

Click here to visit the host page of this month’s Blog Carnival! Much like an e-zine, you will find articles from our alliance members about our fair trade excursions. So, take this opportunity to blog hop! We would love you to participate by adding comments (here, or on the posts) and we’ve included a Mr Linky on the host page if you would like to write your own post.
