Real Couple’s Favorite Fair Trade Products – Jesse & Michael

I am REALLY excited for today’s post! For those of you that follow us on Facebook, you may remember me asking for any and all previous registrants to share their favorite fair trade products with us. Today is the first in a series of posts featuring real couple’s favorite fair trade products. Obviously I have my favorites, but I know you all do too. Not to mention, we want to help future registrants with the overwhelming task of registering for gifts.

Jesse & Michael, a newlywed couple living in Maine so graciously volunteered to help us out. Not only did this beautiful couple look amazing on their wedding day, they have some great picks for us! A HUGE thanks to Jesse & Michael for participating. If you are a previous registrant, and are interested in having your favorite products featured, email me and I will give you more details (it’s easy & painless, I promise)!

On May 6, 2012, almost four years to the day from when we first met, Mike and I married in Castine, Maine, on a rocky point with Grindle’s Eddy swirling ahead of us in the harbor. Our wedding guests, along with friends and family, included four seals (drawn to the bagpiper perhaps), a Bald Eagle, a loon and three dogs.

Initially, we didn’t want to register anywhere, but our families pointed out it was more for our guests than us. We were thrilled to find 7 Hopes United as an alternative to the usual big chain stores. The organization’s mission reflects our commitment to the environment, to “giving back” and to supporting small businesses and artisans. It is now our top choice for purchasing wedding and other gifts, as well as items for our home.

We currently live in Maine, with no plans to leave. Mike is a marine systems engineer, I am a freelance journalist and communications consultant and our black lab/golden retriever mix, Alice, is a lovable, energetic menace to society. Our style is a blend of coastal living and country. As wooden boat sailors, we gravitate towards wooden pieces –even our wedding rings are made of wood– and soft, earth-tone colors.

1) Large Capiz Bowl Sunset
We received these first two gifts as a set and love them – especially for salads! The deep red of the bowl is a gorgeous backdrop for greens and other veggies.

2) Twisted Olive Wood Server Set
The olive wood serving set is so unique and versatile. We get compliments every time we use them.

3) Dragonfly Vase
With the dragonflies as the centerpiece, this vase looks beautiful with or without flowers. I particularly love the light jade color as it happens to be my favorite shade of green.

4) Brooklyn Slate Cheese Board
This is one of our favorite items. We use it regularly when we have company to set out whatever new cheeses we are trying from the local co-op. With the soapstone chalk, you can label each cheese directly on the slate – or draw silly faces, depending on your mood.

Coffee Date : FOUR

peter-pbSometimes I just love to wake up in the morning, and make the quick jaunt along the boardwalk over to Pacific Bean for one of their delicious mochas. Owned by one of the kindest and most welcoming Italian men, Pacific Bean and their 30 something mochas keep me coming back for more.

A couple of my favorite mochas are the White Almond Joy [white chocolate, coconut, almond & vanilla syrup] and the Funky Monkey [mexican chocolate, real peanut butter, & banana syrup]. Definitely one of my favorite spots to take family visiting from out of town – it’s the perfect start to a morning walk along Crystal Pier to watch the surfers.

If you were to join me for coffee this morning, I would tell you that today is a busy day…I need to head to Escondido soon for the Welk Farmer’s Market. It’s pretty windy by the beach this morning, and I’m hoping the weather is a bit nicer inland. Going to the Welk Farmer’s Market almost feels like a vacation to me because it’s usually warmer in Escondido, and held at the Welk Resort where there are always people relaxing on vacation.

I would also tell you that this weekend is Coachella – a music festival in Indio, CA that my husband & I have been going to for a few years. It usually falls right between our two birthdays – so it’s our gift to each other and a way for us to do something we really love…see hundreds of live bands all in one weekend!! :) I’m really looking forward to seeing The Lumineers this year! If you haven’t listened to them, you’ll have to check them out.

That being said, if you’re going to the Little Italy Mercato this Saturday, be sure to stop by our booth and say “hi” to our friend Lucia from Malia Designs! She is one of our favorite people and we just love that we’ve been able to connect with so many wonderful people through fair trade.

Have a great week,
xo Ash

A Fair Trade Trip Down Memory Lane

photo (9)I’m just wrapping up a wonderful trip home to Cleveland, Ohio where I grew up.  It was my son’s first trip to Ohio.  Actually, it was his first trip outside of California and on a plane.  It has been so special sharing my first home with Declan.  He’s only 18 months old so the sharing is more for me at this point than for him really but it means so much to me that he is sleeping in my old bedroom and that he is meeting the children of my high school friends.  The photo to the left is of Declan in his first ever real winter coat (a friend living in Cleveland with a son kindly let us borrow it). He’s always only needed heavy sweaters on cool San Diego days and nights. And since I’ve been here I also had a chance to visit my old stomping ground one day while Declan was visiting his grandma on his dad’s side. Lakewood is the first suburb just west of the city of Cleveland and it’s here that I spent my early and teen years. I left for college and then volunteered for a year and then headed back to Cleveland for a while to decide what I would do next.  It was during this time I had the chance to live in Tremont, a neighborhood on Cleveland’s west side.

I’d like to take you on a little tour of this jewel of a neighborhood!

Civilization (or Civy as my husband calls it) is a small, quaint and cute coffee shop in an old pharmacy; the old pharmacy that my paternal grandmother’s family shopped at when she was a girl.  Its dark wood creates a cozy atmosphere. The majority of their coffee is organic fair trade (check out the photo above) and you can get a small cup of good tasting coffee for just a dollar).

Visible Voice is a locally owned book store quite near Civilization.  I absolutely love the name of the place; it’s so clever! The sign above resides outside the front door of Visible Voice and for me pretty much sums up the feel of the place: independent and proud!  And they sell a lot of interesting and unusual titles about Cleveland.

The Banyan Tree is another locally owned small business in Tremont.  They sell unique clothes, jewelry and accessories as well as other gift items.  And I was so excited to find out that they sell fair trade jewelry and clothing this just adds to why I love the store another reason, your purchases are given to you in reusable bags.

Lily Chocolates was new to me but its reputation of creating all its own delicious chocolates right at home in Tremont had proceeded itself.  With that in mind I made my way over to taste test on my own.  I asked the clerk if they had any fair trade chocolate and she said they had thought about it but found that they couldn’t afford it.  It sinks my heart that fair trade chocolate seems so out of reach to small chocolatiers sometimes.  A chocolate maker I know in San Diego had a similar problem.  Still I was impressed they had even had it on their mind as a possibility (and I might drop a line again in the future to see if they have started using it).

Lucky’s Café is just across the street from Lily’s but was closed so I didn’t get a chance to see if they have fair trade items.  However, I did check out their garden which is next to the place, they use the produce they grow on their menu.  I hope that they sell fair trade but I was definitely thrilled to learn that they grow, at least some, of their own produce.  I mean really how awesome is that?!?

There are other little gems in Tremont too like great restaurants and a few bars, art galleries and at least one wine bar.  But the places I stopped at are my favorites.

Cleveland may not be my home any more but there is and always will be a very special place in my heart for the city and its surrounding suburbs and communities. I really and truly love Cleveland and one never forgets her first true love!

Thank you for sharing in this little journey with me.

Have a great day – Dawn
