Summer is here! We love entertaining and these decorative table runners crafted by fair trade artisans in India are the perfect addition to our summer soirees. Can’t get enough of these block-printed beauties!

IMG_1922 IMG_1923 IMG_1924

Each of our decorative table runners are produced by artisans in the Rajasthan region of India. They use a traditional method of hand-block printing that has been passed down for generations. If you look closely, you can sometimes identify the borders of the blocks and verify the handmade process. From start to finish, each table runner can take 7-10 days to create. True works of art!

World Fair Trade Day 2014

Mother’s Day

This weekend marks two special dates, World Fair Trade Day (May 10, 2014) & Mother’s Day! I love that these dates fall on the same weekend, because so many of the artists we support are Moms. What better way to honor your Mom by purchasing a gift that helps support a mom in need, like Layet Monica pictured above?

Layet Monica is a single mom of three, and this 31 Bits beneficiary is a beautiful example of a mother’s love! She works hard to provide for her children, send them to school, and care for their needs. And she does it all with a smile! Isn’t she stunning? Support Monica, and other moms by giving a fair trade gift this Mother’s Day! Click here to shop some of our favorite gifts for Mom!

World Fair Trade Day

World Fair Trade Day is a time to celebrate and be inspired by the work that’s being done to support a fair economy. Fair trade is about people and the planet, and about purchasing products we love that are fair to both! When you buy fair trade products, you can be sure that your purchases are directly benefiting those that made it. For farmers and the artists that we at Seven Hopes United partner with, that means getting paid a living wage for the work they do, in addition a portion of those fair trade premiums are helping to better their communities. Purchasing fair trade products is a step toward an ethical and sustainable marketplace.

This weekend, join 100,000 people around the United States and Canada in learning about and promoting fair trade! Help us support economic justice for farmers, workers, and artisans around the world. To get started, click the educational video below from our friends at Fair World Project. Then, help us spread the word & share this blog post on Facebook or Twitter #WFTD2014!

In honor of these special celebrations, SevenHopesUnited.com is offering FREE SHIPPING on all orders through 5/11/2014 with the coupon code “ILOVEMOM”. Woot woot!

We’ll also have our booth set up with all kinds of fair trade products at the Little Italy Mercato on Saturday 8am-2pm, and the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market on Sunday 9am-1:30pm. Be sure to stop by and say hi if you’re in San Diego!

Many of us do not know or understand the true origins of May Day – International Workers’ Day. Just over 100 years ago, the working class struggled to gain the 8-hour work day. Working conditions were harsh, and it was common to work 10 to 16 hours a day. For years, many people died and suffered horrible injuries in the workplace.

On May 1, 1886, more than 300,000 workers across the United States walked off their jobs in the first May Day celebration in history. We must remember that people fought for the rights and dignities we enjoy today, and there is still a lot more to fight for.

Photo: Ghetty Images – International Worker’s Day Rally in Bangladesh on May 1, 2013.

May Day (Today) in:

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA
One thousand factory workers and opposers to the Cambodia National Rescue Party gathered on the streets outside the Cambodian capital’s Freedom Park. These workers are fighting for a higher minimum wage and labor rights.

JAKARTA, INDONESIA
Around 50,000 workers intend to hold rallies in the Indonesian capital over the next two days and police have deployed nearly 20,000 officers to maintain order. Workers are fighting against stagnant incomes, poor retirement and health insurances and rising transportation and housing costs.

There are many other protests and rallies occurring right now all over the world. We must let the origins of May Day serve as a reminder – many lives were sacrificed so that we could have the 8-hour day, include Saturday as part of the weekend, as well as safe working conditions and child labor laws.

There are many workers in the developing world (like Phnom Penh, Jakarta, and many others) still fighting for these rights, and we must do our part to support them. Whether you vow to not shop at stores that purchase from sweatshop factories, or choose to support fair wages by shopping fair trade.

Companies like Seven Hopes United support artisan cooperatives that are Fair Trade Federation members. Fair Trade Federation members are held to a higher standard, insisting that workers be treated with dignity and respect, have safe working conditions, no child labor, and fair wages. There are many other fair trade principles that ensure the rights of workers and better their communities as well.

We as consumers have the power to create change – we can demand better working conditions and fair wages just by purchasing fair trade products. It may seem like such a small gesture, but it makes a world of difference to the artisans, farmers, and their families. This is why we celebrate and remember May Day.

Easter is just around the corner, and I wanted to share some ideas on creating the sweetest Fair Trade Easter basket for your little ones. You can find some of these items right here at www.sevenhopesunited.com, and we’ve provided links for the others.

5 Ideas for a Fair Trade Easter

Fair Trade Easter Basket
1. Start out with one of these adorable Mini Bolga Baskets, hand-woven by women in Ghana. Each basket is unique, so every child will have a basket entirely their own. They are the perfect size for little hands, and after Easter can be used at your local farmers market. A friend of mine has her kids bring their mini bolga baskets to the market, and they each get to fill them with their own healthy snacks for the week <3

2. I know fair trade chocolates can be hard to find in your local grocery stores, but if you’re up for the task, many co-op type stores carry yummy fair trade options. You can also order fair trade chocolate online – I found a few favorites here, like these organic & fairly traded Milk Chocolate Eggs from Equal Exchange. They also have some fair trade chocolate bars available.

matrix-fleur-knit-thumb
3. Add one of these special little bunnies from Bla Bla Kids – handmade by expert knitters in Peru, with a commitment to fair trade. These lovies are sure to become one of your children’s favorites for many years to come. I especially love Pierre the Bunny with his green satchel & scarf. For your sweet little girl, there are a couple of adorable choices, Fleur (pictured here) and Mirabelle.

butterfly-gourd-container4. These sweet little decorative gourd containers are a fun & unique addition where your little ones can keep their special treasures. Hand-carved by a small fair trade cooperative in Peru, there are several designs to choose from available here at Seven Hopes United; you can also pick some up in person if you’re in San Diego this Saturday at the Little Italy Mercato.

eva-hand-painted-bird-cup5. And last but not least, add a set of our favorite kid-friendly Eva Cups & Bowls. Choose a different color for each child, and they have their very own special set of dishes for water, juice, and snacks. Stainless steel, food-safe, and hand-painted by talented artisans in Kashmir, India.

What are some of your ideas for an ethical Fair Trade Easter basket? Please let us know what you would add in the comments below! We’d love to hear from you…maybe you even have some great handmade ideas?

Sari Baby Blankets

Now Available from our Fair Trade Partners in Bangladesh

We’ve got baby on the brain! My husband and I are expecting our first baby in August, and I couldn’t resist getting these adorable Sari Baby Blankets from our fair trade partners in Bangladesh. I just can’t help imagining how sweet our new baby will look wrapped up in this beautiful blanket made with hope and love by women from across the globe. Our colorful sari baby blankets are one-of-a-kind and reversible, so you can choose a print that will complement your unique style. I adore this print that we fittingly named “Baby Love.”

belly

Each blanket is lightweight, and generously sized (40″ x 40″) to make swaddling easy. The traditional “kantha” hand-stitching and vintage sari fabric creates an incredibly soft feel that your baby will love, and will continue to get softer with every wash.

Handmade Sari Baby Blankets

Best of all, our new Sari Baby Blankets are versatile: meaning you can use them as a stroller or nursing cover, burp cloth, tummy time blanket, and more! What’s not to love about that?

Each of our sari baby blankets are handmade by a women’s cooperative in Bangladesh. Our fair trade partners work with women who have escaped a life of human trafficking – your purchase of these handmade blankets provide hope for a better future, dignity, and living wages. These women have been given a chance to rise above their circumstances and take back their humanity, and we thank you for wanting to be a part of that. Our goal is to bring hope to the poor, one fair trade purchase at a time.

Our new sari baby blankets are a wonderful and unique baby shower gift that they are sure to cherish! For more fair trade baby shower gift ideas visit our previous blog posts here and here.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Equality for women is progress for all” emphasizes how gender equality, empowerment of women, women’s full enjoyment of human rights and the eradication of poverty are essential to economic and social development. This years theme truly embraces the meaning of Fair Trade, empowering and enriching the lives of those living in poverty around the world.

Many of the women Seven Hopes United helps support are not only the head of the household, but leaders in the community, women creating change to provide a better world now and in the future.

Seven Hopes United helps support:

        • Young women in Uganda working toward their college education – to pursue their dreams & create change! To date, with our partners Sseko Designs, we’ve enabled 47 women to continue on to university.
        • Women in Cambodia that are in need of healing & are working to rebuild their lives after being victims of sex trafficking. Through our partners Malia Designs and Five Accessories we are helping to provide a life of dignity and respect, as well as the opportunity for a sustainable income.
        • Women in India and Bangladesh that have suffered the effects of extreme poverty and sex trafficking, living in the slums. Through our partners ConneXions, we’ve received some of the most beautiful kantha quilts, and we’ve helped provide a better life for hundreds of women through a sustainable fair income.
        • Women in the far-reaching parts of the world like Kyrgyzstan – in a part of the world where there are few opportunities for women we’ve helped support small felting businesses that provide food, shelter, and education to their families .

Please join us in watching this short video from Half the Sky, for an excellent example of how women are empowering one another and inspiring change within their communities:

One thing all of these women have in common is that they have overcome poverty through fair trade, by coming together, and they are using the opportunities given to them to provide a better life for their families.

All over the world people on March 8th will celebrate women and their accomplishments for International Women’s Day. We hope that through sharing the stories of the women who inspire us we will also inspire something in YOU. These women are our mothers, daughters, and sisters, and our community’s small business owners, teachers, political leaders, farmers, community health workers, activists, and more.

Please join us in the fight against poverty, hunger, and injustice by empowering our sisters through Seven Hopes United and in your own community.

Fair Trade Wedding Wednesday – yay! I know lots of you love these posts as much as I do, and today’s real couple, Kathleen and Russell, have a great list of favorites from their fair trade registry. A big thanks to Kathleen for sharing her list and beautiful wedding photos with us!

We are a young couple from the Midwest who have a laid-back and eclectic style. Our first home is an apartment in Bloomington, Indiana (Home of the Hoosiers!) and we’ve worked hard to make hand-me-down furniture and thrift store kick-knacks look cohesive. I am a self-proclaimed “lazy girl crafter” meaning I love homemade, unique decorations but don’t have the patience for long projects. With Fair Trade items you get quality craftsmanship without having to do it yourself – perfect! After learning about and becoming an advocate for Fair Trade in college, Russell and I were excited to find a wedding registry to promote the cause.

Without further ado, here are a few of Kathleen & Russell’s favorite fair trade products!

fair-trade-wedding-kathleen-russell

1. Turquoise Paisley Table Runner
This beautiful table runner makes our $10 garage sale table look much greater than it’s worth. There are beautiful bits of red and yellow in the design which inspired the color scheme for our living space.

2. Turquoise Blue Vetiver Placemats
These placemats tie in well with the Paisley Table Runner. Best of all, you can throw
them in the washing machine with no damage done!

3. Green Ginkgo Pot Holder
My great-grandma’s favorite tree was the Ginkgo. She would display the dried leaves on the wall of her apartment, among the other oddities that she collected. This pot holder is sentimental, cheery, and bright.

4. Blown Glass Pitcher
In my opinion, this pitcher is one of the most beautiful items on the site. I can’t wait for winter to be over so we can sit on our porch and drink lemonade from it!

5. Handblown Drinking Glasses
These glasses, like the pitcher, are beautiful yet sturdy. We use them daily, but we’re also sure to put them out when guests are over!

Thanks again Kathleen, for the fabulous list of products and your awesome product descriptions! If you are interested in having your favorite fair trade products featured, email me and I will give you more details!

5. Delicious Dessert
A quick and simple dessert that will steal your man’s heart (or at least his stomach) – it has been a long-time favorite of my Dad’s, and he requests it on several occasions. Make it special by using your sweethearts favorite treats: some of my favorite combos are banana pudding with fresh bananas and crushed vanilla wafers on top, or pistachio pudding with chopped pecans on top. Or to stay on trend with the rest of our Valentine’s Day recipes try chocolate pudding with cocoa powder or shaved chocolate sprinkled on top ;)
